Proofreading

What is it and who is it for?

Proofreading is the last step of the editorial process; after your work has been copyedited and formatted but before it has been published. It comes at the very end to ensure there are no typos hidden somewhere between the sentences before your work is published and/or printed. This is certainly not the time to make any big changes to your work or rewriting its content.

What is included?

As I read through the text, I check the following:

  • Grammar, spelling, and punctuation

  • Consistency with capitalization, spelling, and numeration.

  • Formatting (font size and style, word and line spacing, paragraph consistency)

  • Images, tables, graphs are consistent with the captions (if used in the material)

  • Use of abbreviations and acronyms as well as initialisms

  • Surface level fact-checking (names of the institutions, major historic events or names, etc.)

Not included:

  • The overall manuscript formatting to prepare for the publishing (print or e-publishing)

  • The suggestions to the content, story and/or character development (it is part of the developmental editing or manuscript evaluation services)

  • Thorough, deep fact-checking (it is a separate service and requires a different set of skills)

How much does it cost?

Fiction and non-fiction (including short stories and novellas): $0.015 per word.

Business materials and other documents: please reach out to me for a personalized quote.

What is the turnaround?

It depends on the project – the size, the genre, and writing style is taken into consideration when assessing the time needed to complete the project. Once I know more about your project, I will be able to provide you with a more accurate time estimation.
